What are some of the fears that you have? Some of these are very healthy to keep. Those fears can steer us to safety for sure. Say you see that great white shark swimming nearby, maybe it's time to get out of the ocean. Or, if you see all that busy fast traffic going across the crosswalk, maybe it's not a great time to cross the street. As a kid, you work through some of the small, irrational fears like automatic bathroom flushers, bugs, et cetera, but some of those stick with us as we head into adulthood. The fears to pinpoint are the ones that are holding you back and inhibiting your life, whether it's going up and speaking to a group of people or in front of a large crowd, or maybe it's a fear of getting started to get back into shape physically, because it's such a long way to go. Whatever your fears, it's important to figure out which ones are the biggest ones that are holding you back from living your ideal life. I'd suggest tackling the bigger ones first, that are holding you back because that's going to have the most positive impact on your life.

This is going to be a lifetime project, as you can continue to knock down old fears or conquer new ones that pop up. You're worth continuing the hard work of conquering those fears and expanding your life. Now that you've pinpointed a fear that's holding you back, it's time to figure out how to address that fear. If you have a fear of flying, then maybe it's taking a short 30-minute flight Dallas to Houston, or if it's public speaking, then work on some smaller group presentations first, before speaking in front of a large room filled with people. I personally had a pretty bad stammer growing up and it really made me hate talking to people. Starting in high school, I decided that I couldn't live like that, as I was missing out on making connections with my peers. So, I began going up to folks and just forcing myself to talk.

I eventually began making myself talk to as many strangers as possible. This led me all the way to speaking in front of hundreds of people now and for that, I lost my stammer pretty early on into high school. The best way to take on any of these fears are to take them head-on. Another fear I conquered was one I didn't even know I had until it presented itself. The very first night of the Tony Robbins four-day event, they had the option for the folks in the crowd to do a firewalk. I had never really had the inclination to walk 12 feet across hot coals, but at the event they have multiple lanes for those that choose to take it on. To force myself to do the firewalk, I bought the $20 t-shirt before the event even started. I know for me, if I spend $20 for a t-shirt then personally, that means I'm going to go for it.

Walking down to the Dallas Convention Center, we had to walk barefoot across the asphalt road. My feet hurt just walking across the road, and I thought to myself, that's not good. As we approached the lanes of coals, you could feel the heat coming off those lanes. That's when the fear set in. It all just got very real. We were there in line and some of the people were making it across, while others were pulled off due to burning their feet. That's a way to really ramp up the fear. Then it was my turn. I did the mind tricks that were taught as I walked along, and the only time I got burnt was when I broke concentration. about a foot from the end of the lane. I thought, oh my gosh, I'm walking on hot coals, and that was the time I was burnt.

Then I was off the coals and man, what a feat! The thought behind the firewalk is that if you can walk on fire, then what can't you do? Walking on those coals was a life-changing event and it paved the way for me to take on any challenges head on, that life throws at me. Now, I do not recommend you do a firewalk without professionals around. Don't try this at home kids. The famous quote from Bob Proctor is, “there was great stuff waiting for you, on the other side of fear.” Those are some true words right there. If you can put the time and effort into conquering your fears, then you can really live an unleashed life. Again, there are some good healthy fears to have, but we're talking about conquering those fears that are holding you back from becoming an even better human being.

It's going to be tough, and you'll be very uncomfortable at some points along the way, but in the long run, you'll be much better off after getting past those fears. Think of your biggest fear and imagine what you could do if that no longer is dictating your life in a negative way. Conquering fears can lead to massive personal gains, whether that's mentally, physically, or financially. A lot of fear is based around not having enough information. Once you have that information, it makes it a lot easier to tackle that fear. If I hadn't tackled my fear of speaking to people, there's no way I'd be where I am at this stage in my life. Also, I can add value to those that I speak to on a stage, on a regular basis about investing and teaching them how to be financially independent. We all have fears in our life that are healthy and unhealthy. The unhealthy ones hold us back and limit our lives. Take charge of your life and take those fears head on so you can keep expanding your life. The great stuff truly is on the other side of fear.
